The year of 2021 marked the 150th anniversary of an outstanding Russian scientist — botanist and
plant physiologist, prominent organizer of science and founder of scientific institutions, public figure,
and academician Andrey Aleksandrovich Richter (August 15, 1871 — April 2, 1947). A student of
the distinguished botanists and plant physiologists A.S. Famintsyn and I.P. Borodin, he laid the
foundation for modern plant physiology research in photosynthesis and assimilation, physiological
basics of plant immunity, and agricultural plant physiology. He evolved into a brilliant experimenter
in the laboratories of the St. Petersburg (Russian) Academy of Sciences and St. Petersburg University
at the beginning of the 20th century. Later on he established his own scientific school of physiologists,
which in different years included future academicians N.A. Maksimov, M.Kh. Chailakhian, professors
A.A. Nichiporovich, professors D.A. Sabinin and K.T. Sukhorukov to name a few. A.A. Richter was
one of the founders and rector of Perm University (1917–1923), the organizer of plant physiology
departments at Saratov University and Agricultural Institute, as well as the organizer and first director
of the Institute of Plant Physiology (Russian Academy of Sciences). Yet many facts of his biography
were largely forgotten and are unknown to the scientific community. During his life A.A. Richter went
through many trials and tribulations, but still maintained his humanistic beliefs and position of the
scientific truth and integrity proponent.
The paper is based on the new archival documents, first of all correspondence with academicians
V.L. Komarov and I.P. Borodin, and testimonies of contemporaries.

This paper reviews why and how it happened that applied botany, in contrast to other botanical sciences, has not been “dragged in” from Western Europe but originated in Russia instead. The leading role in the making and institutionalisation of applied botany was played by the two directors of St.-Petersburg Botanical Garden, Alexander F. Batalin and Alexander A. Fischer von Waldheim, the latter’s associate Robert E. Regel, and Ivan P. Borodin, Professor at St. Petersburg Forest Institute. Each of these scientists had consecutively headed the Bureau of Applied Botany (now N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources). The paper describes their contributions to the development of applied botany during the “era of the brilliant rise of botanical disciplines” in Russia.

The article is based on the correspondence between A.A. Richter and academicians V.L. Komarov and I.P. Borodin during the 1917–1923. The letters, mostly from A.A. Richter, are held in the funds of V.L. Komarov, president of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Central Archive, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow), and I.P. Borodin (Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg branch). It being valuable biographical and historical evidence, these materials have not been studied yet and are unknown to research community. A.A. Richter did not leave notes and memoirs, hence his letters are even more important as the only documentary source of information. It supplements and explains the known facts of his biography, and also provides new details and insights. A.A. Richter’s activity as a botanist and plant physiologist of the St. Petersburg school was closely related to the founding and formation of a new university in Perm. It remains all but forgotten for his Perm tenure fell on the years of Russian revolution and civil war. This had been a challenging time. A.A. Richter, professor and Head of the Plant Physiology Department, had to recruit staff, organize teaching process, build research and training laboratories. His successful work and commitment were appreciated by his colleagues who repeatedly elected him head of departments and rector of the University (1921). Yet again he proved his organizational skills by building new educational facilities and scientific departments at Perm University. In many ways, it was a defining time for the scientist, who believed in the future of Russia and pursued science despite adversities and hardships.

Historically, the term “Little Botanists” used to designate a community of the young people who had just started their scientific careers after graduation from the St. Petersburg University in the late XIX — early XX centuries. The society emerged amidst robust development of the botanical science in Russia. At that time V.V. Dokuchaev and A.N. Beketov initiated extensive soil geographic and geobotanical prospecting in various regions of European Russia. The society meetings had been unofficial and informal, unlike meetings of their senior colleagues — professors of the Imperial St. Petersburg University, members of the Botanical section of the Imperial St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists and the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Many of them made their first steps there and later on became prominent scientists. The most famous were A.N. Krasnov, G.I. Tanfiliev, S.G. Navashin, V.L. Komarov, S.P. Kostychev, A.A. Richter, N.A. Maximov, B.L. Isachenko, V.N. Sukachev, D.I. Ivanovsky, M.S. Tsvet, to name a few. Their association had been functioning for almost two decades and involved several generations of scientists. Thanks to them, new directions were established and developed in Russian biology, including experimental studies of live processes in plants and microorganisms. These new scientific approaches determined to a large extent the advances in botany and plant physiology in Russia for many decades.
