Рассмотрены условия и причины возникновения Физиологического института им. А.А. Ухтомского в Санкт-Петербургском (Ленинградском) государственном университете. Представлены данные о научной тематике Физиологического института в начальный период его работы, в военные годы, а также в год 50-летнего юбилея с момента его образования. Дана последовательность смены директоров института, краткие вехи их биографии и научные интересы. Сделан акцент на существовании различных форм организации физиологической науки в нашей стране. Физиологический институт им. акад. А.А. Ухтомского представлял собой современную форму объединения научной и преподавательской работы, участвуя в исследовании и решении сложных научных задач, обеспечивая знакомство студентов с передовыми достижениями науки, предоставляя условия для овладения студентами азами экспериментальной работы и подготовки первых научных работ.

The article explores the context and causes of the emergence of A.A. Ukhtomsky Institute of Physiology at Leningrad State University, covers the range of research topics of the Institute in the initial period of its work, during the war and in the year of the 50th anniversary of its foundation, and names its consecutive directors with briefly mentioned milestones in their biography and scientific interests. The emphasis is placed on the existence of different forms of organisation of physiological science in our country. A.A. Ukhtomsky Institute of Physiology was a modern form of combining research with teaching, addressing complicated scientific problems, introducing students to the most recent scientific advances and providing conditions for acquiring basic skills of experimental work and preparing their first scientific papers.

В 2021 г. исполнилось 150 лет со дня рождения Андрея Александровича Рихтера (1871–
1947), крупнейшего учёного, ботаника и физиолога растений, ученика А.С. Фаминцына
и И.П. Бородина, приват-доцента Санкт-Петербургского университета, профессора
Пермского, Саратовского и Московского университетов, члена-корреспондента (1929)
и действительного члена (1932) АН СССР, организатора и первого директора Института
физиологии растений (ИФР) АН СССР (1934–1938). Его научные исследования заложи-
ли основу современных знаний о физиологических процессах растений, у него было много
учеников, продолжавших исследования в созданных им научных школах по изучению фо-
тосинтеза (А.А. Ничипорович), питания растений (Д.А. Сабинин), устойчивости растений
к внешним факторам и проблем иммунитета (К.Т. Сухоруков). Сообщение посвящено из-
учению жизненного пути А.А. Рихтера в контексте исторических эпох, его роли как обще-
ственного деятеля и организатора научных и образовательных учреждений, создателя новых
научных направлений и школ. Кроме свидетельств современников, использованы новые ма-
териалы — документы, хранящиеся в архивах, и в первую очередь письма В.Л. Комарову и
И.П. Бородину.

The year of 2021 marked the 150th anniversary of an outstanding Russian scientist — botanist and
plant physiologist, prominent organizer of science and founder of scientific institutions, public figure,
and academician Andrey Aleksandrovich Richter (August 15, 1871 — April 2, 1947). A student of
the distinguished botanists and plant physiologists A.S. Famintsyn and I.P. Borodin, he laid the
foundation for modern plant physiology research in photosynthesis and assimilation, physiological
basics of plant immunity, and agricultural plant physiology. He evolved into a brilliant experimenter
in the laboratories of the St. Petersburg (Russian) Academy of Sciences and St. Petersburg University
at the beginning of the 20th century. Later on he established his own scientific school of physiologists,
which in different years included future academicians N.A. Maksimov, M.Kh. Chailakhian, professors
A.A. Nichiporovich, professors D.A. Sabinin and K.T. Sukhorukov to name a few. A.A. Richter was
one of the founders and rector of Perm University (1917–1923), the organizer of plant physiology
departments at Saratov University and Agricultural Institute, as well as the organizer and first director
of the Institute of Plant Physiology (Russian Academy of Sciences). Yet many facts of his biography
were largely forgotten and are unknown to the scientific community. During his life A.A. Richter went
through many trials and tribulations, but still maintained his humanistic beliefs and position of the
scientific truth and integrity proponent.
The paper is based on the new archival documents, first of all correspondence with academicians
V.L. Komarov and I.P. Borodin, and testimonies of contemporaries.

Общественная деятельность А.А. Рихтера (1871–1947) — известного учёного, ботаника и фи-
зиолога растений России первой половины прошлого века — до сих пор не изучена. В начале
века перед ним встал выбор: служение науке или обществу, поначалу в своей деятельности
он пытался совместить эти цели. Его активность проявилась ещё накануне первой русской
революции 1905–1906 гг. во время студенческих волнений в Санкт-Петербургском универ-
ситете, затем — в ходе самой революции в событиях внутри и вокруг университета. Он был
солидарен со студентами, поддерживая их требования и протесты против политики руко-
водства университета и властей, вместе с другими младшими преподавателями он выступал
в оппозиции ректору и консервативной профессуре, добиваясь улучшения условий труда и
уважения их прав. После поражения революции отошёл от политической деятельности и вер-
нулся к научной работе. Тем не менее, на протяжении многих лет он сотрудничал в Обществе
вспомоществования студентам университета, а также участвовал в деятельности земских ор-
ганов Калужской губернии. Однако его отношения с руководством факультета и универси-
тета, а также с некоторыми коллегами были испорчены, что непоправимо сказалось на его
служебной карьере.
Многие исторические и биографические материалы и документы, использованные в статье,
публикуются впервые, другие, включая ранее опубликованные, оставались неизученными и
не рассматривались в этом контексте.

This paper is dedicated to the unexplored social and political activities of A.A. Richter, a prominent
scientist, botanist, and plant physiologist of the first half of the 20th century in Russia. At the beginning
of the century, he faced a choice — to serve science or society. Initially, he tried to combine these
objectives in his work. His public activity was evident already on the eve of the first Russian revolution
of 1905–1906 during the student unrest at St. Petersburg University, then during the revolution itself
in the events, that took place at the university, and related to it. He was sympathetic with students and
showed his solidarity with them, supporting students’ demands and protests against the policies of the
university leadership and the authorities. Along with other junior lecturers, he stood up to the rector
and professorship, seeking better working conditions and respect for their rights as participants in the
educational process.
After the revolution was defeated, he quit politics and returned to scientific work. Nonetheless, for
many years A.A. Richter had actively cooperated with the University Students’ Aid Society, and also
participated in the Kaluga province zemstvo assemblies. However, his reputation had been damaged
in the eyes of the department and university management, relationships with some colleagues
deteriorated, and his academic career was irreparably damaged.
Many historical and biographical materials and documents used in the article are published for the first
time, others, including previously published, had not yet been examined and studied in this context.

Настоящая публикация представляет собою первую попытку «живой биографии» известного отечественного зоолога и цитолога профессора Ивана Ивановича Соколова, чья жизнь была тесно связана с Санкт-Петербургским университетом, который он окончил в 1909 г.: Зоотомический кабинет и кафедры генетики и экспериментальной зоологии, а также эмбриологии и Институтом цитологии АН СССР, где ученый проработал с 1957 г. до конца жизни. Проф. Соколов участвовал в научных экскурсиях и работал на Мурмане, в Крыму, на Кавказе, в Карелии, Средней Азии, на Дальнем Востоке, на Неаполитанской зоологической и Русской зоологической (Виллафранка) станциях и в Зоологическом институте Гейдельбергского университета. Основные научные интересы его лежали в области цитогенетики и биоразнообразия и таксономии специфической группы водных клещей. Помимо научных публикаций ученого, статей о нем и его университетского архивного дела, ранее никем не изученного, в статье использованы собранные автором воспоминания об ученом, собственные дневниковые записи И.И. Соколова, значительная часть которых впервые вводится в научный оборот, как и большинство фотографий.

This publication is the first attempt to make “living biography” of well-known Russian zoologist and cytologist, Professor Ivan Ivanovitch Sokolow. Sokolow was born in a big family of the owner of tobacco factory and from his mother side had the German roots. In his student’s years (1904–1909) he has made a trip to Heidelberg where he studied and worked under supervision of famous protozoologist and zoologist, Prof. O. Bütschli (1906). Sokolow also participated in excursions to Crimea (1909) and Murman (1908, 1950); he has worked in Middle Asia (1925), Karelia (1920–1932), Far East (1927) and Caucasus (1913, 1916) as well as at Naples zoological station (1909), again visited Heidelberg (1910), and spent several moths at Russian zoological station in Villfranshe-Sur-Mer (1911). The main topic of Sokolow’s studies at that time was spermatogenesis in arthropods and biodiversity and taxonomy of specific group of aquatic mites. Great meaning for him in many respects was half-year expedition made with Prof. V.A. Dogiel to British East Africa and Uganda (1914). In 1918 Sokolow has defended cytogenetical study “Etudes on spermatogenesis in Diplopoda” and got the Magister (PhD) title. Then he had worked again in Zootomical cabinet (till 1922), Department of genetics and experimental zoology (afterwards Department of genetics) (1922–1948), Department of embryology (1948–1955), and terminated his scientific life in the Institute of cytology AS USSR, where he has established and leaded the laboratory of cell morphology. His personal file in the University archive (never investigated before) and his own notes made at the University time (1906, 1908) were used for the article. Several recollections about the scientist recorded by author are included in the publication too. Most part of the materials as well as many unpublished photos are putting into scientific circulation for the first time.

Дерюгина, написана на основе знакомства не только с опубликованными, но и с неизданными архивными материалами, а также интервью с его современниками. Впервые жизненный путь ученого рассматривается с позиций создания «живой биографии», где на первый план выходит не перечисление и разбор научных работ, а личность их автора. Статья предваряет публикацию дневника студента К.М. Дерюгина 1899 года. Значительная часть фотографий, иллюстрирующих текст, малоизвестна.

The biographical article dedicated to life story and scientifi c activity of well-known Russian hydrobiologist and zoologist K.M. Derjugin. It is made according to published and unpublished (archive) materials as well as based on interviews with people who new the scientist. Life story of the scientist is considering from the “living biography” position, where personality of the man is more important instead of enumeration and review of his studies. The biographical article is heralding publication of the daily notes made by Derjugin in 1899 placed in the issue. Many of photos provided in the publication had not been well-known before.

Фаусек (Андрусовой), выпускницы естественного отделения Высших женских (Бестужевских) курсов 1884 г., прежде всего, посвящена неформальным характеристикам преподавателей-биологов, работавших на курсах в 80-х гг. XIX века. Биографическая статья, написанная авторами публикации, впервые охватывает весь жизненный путь мемуаристки, в большей степени известной в России в качестве основательницы системы дошкольного воспитания по методу Монтессори. Значительная часть фотографий, иллюстрирующих текст, малоизвестна.

These are a selection of the vast reminiscences left by Y. I. Faussek’s, a graduate of the Department of Natural Sciences of St. Petersburg Higher Womens Courses (1884). They primarily reveal the informal character of certain St. Petersburg University professors-biologists, and other events that occurred in 1880s. The authors provide an extensive biographical note on Faussek, who is known for introducing the Montessori system of child education in Russia. Previously unknown photos of Faussek accompany the publication.
