The article is devoted to English natural theology of the XVII–XVIII centuries and especially to its the most prominent author William Paley, the priest of the Church of England, the philosopher, the apologist for Christianity and the doctor of divinity at Cambridge University, the author of the fundamental work «Natural Theology, or Evidences of the Existence and Attributes of the Deity». Paley’s books were very popular in the first half of the XIX century and became practically desk book for students of Cambridge, including young Charles Darwin. William Paley defended the idea of a divine intelligent design in nature, and his Watchmaker analogy gained wide popularity. According to the Watchmaker analogy, the mechanism of the Universe, like the clock mechanism, has its own Creator, who arranged the world according to his intelligent contrivance and design. Paley’s natural theology has had a significant impact on the formation of evolutionary concepts in geology (C. Lyell) and biology (C. Darwin). The main principles of Paley’s natural theology, such as uniformity of animate and inanimate nature, perfect adaptation of living organisms, the utility principle and the pleasure principle, as well as the view of Paley’s natural theology on the problem of death are considered in the article. Attention is paid to Paley’s criticism of the evolutionary views of Buffon and other evolutionists of the XVIII century, Paley’s views on the organization of living organisms and on the nature in general, as well as the attitude of creationist representations of the natural theology of the XVII–XVIII centuries to the modern neo-creationism.

Peter Simon Pallas: a creationist or a pre-Darwinian evolutionist? (Long-standing debates about Pallas’ evolutionary ideas)

A careful analysis of Peter Simon Pallas’ work in a cultural and conceptual context of the advancement of science in the second half of the 18th century confirms his commitment to the ideas of catastroph-ism and creationism. It was Pallas who was the fi rst to summarise arguments against Linnaeus’ limited transformism and much more flexible forms of transformism advanced by Buffon. There are no reasons to interpret Pallas’ classification of large taxa as a prototype of the phylogenetic tree and to portray him as ‘an evolutionist before Darwin’, while explaining his creationist statements by suggesting that they were caused by his desire to conform to public expectations. By purging biology of the vestiges of naive medieval transformism, Pallas championed the idea of a holistic sustainable species, and therefore he anticipated the ways the problem of speciation and evolution would be formulated.

The article discusses a court case in St. Petersburg, Russia, in which a school girl, Maria Schreiber, demanded that the ministry of education must allow an «alternative» to evolution to be taught in high school biology classes. It also considers some aspects of modern creationism in Russia and abroad. The American and Western European «scientifi c creationism» tradition have been translated into Russian. In Russia, representatives of both the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and of some Protestant churches advocate creationism, even though both confessions arrive at this position independently and remain faithful to their theological doctrines. The article also pays attention to the problem of publication of «alternative» textbooks for biology courses and the introduction of religious courses in state and private schools. In generals, it gives an overview of the modern Russian educational landscape, and makes a distinction between two types of creationism — «scientifi c» and «clerical», but it states that these two do not contradict each other and co-exist in Russia.

The paper analyzes socio-cultural and scientific contexts for celebrations of Charles Darwin’s jubilees in 1909, 1932 1959 and 1984. It demonstrates that Darwin’s anniversaries were used for dissemination and popularization of Darwinism, as well as for advancement of various political and philosophical ideas, and shows changing attitudes towards Darwin and Darwinism exhibited by various Christian confessions. Special attention has been paid to interrelations between the evolutionary theory and creationism, and the achievements reached in the last two decades in the fields of molecular biology, paleontology, anthropology. The paper examines stances taken by Vatican, the Church of England, and a few other Christian churches on Darwin and Darwinism in 2009. It gives a brief outline of the socio-cultural and cognitive contexts in which Darwin 2009 jubilee events take place in Russia and the West.
