During the Great Patriotic War, medical research became particularly important. In historiography,
however, much attention is given to medical practices and treatment of the wounded, with theoretical
foundations of medicine receiving little attention. The history of pathological physiology is usually
described as a history of victories and discoveries and mo problems are mentioned. This article
introduces into scientific use an important source for the history of pathophysiological research during
the Great Patriotic War in Dagestan: the answers given by Professor Vladimir Grigorievich Budylin to
the questionnaire of the Commission on the History of the Great Patriotic War under the Dagestan
Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks. The author of the published
document talks about what distinguished scientific research during the war, briefly characterizes the
topics of these studies, touches upon the changes in the work of the Dagestan State Medical Institute,
and points out at the shortcomings in the organization of scientific research in Dagestan at the time.
The publication is preceded with an introduction that characterises the sources of private origin
on the history of health care in Dagestan during the Great Patriotic War, describes the conditions
and circumstances in which the document was created, and provides a brief biographical sketch of
Professor V.G. Budylin. Such sources on the history of regional science are quite rare and, therefore,
the published document is of undoubted interest.
Keywords: Vladimir Budylin, Dagestan, pathological physiology, history of medicine, memoirs.

The essay is devoted to the scientific meetings and consultations with eminent historians of biology Boris E. Raikov and Kirill M. Zawadzki, which occurred in the late 50’s to mid 70’s of the twentieth century. It is shown how these creative contacts had a profound and diversified influence on the formation of different approaches in developing of applied entomology and evolutionary parasitology problems.
