The paper provides information about the first congress on applied botany, held on September 2328, 1920 in Voronezh. This was a significant event for Russia, which the chairman of the Honorary Presidium of the Congress A.A. Yachevsky called «outstanding in the history of Russian science.» The congress brought together the leading botanists and agricultural specialists of the country dealing with cultivated plants and experimental work. At the congress, there were sections covering the place of applied botany in agronomy experimental work; geobotanical research; ecology of wild and cultivated plants; phytopathology; organizational matters. More than 40 reports were presented, among which the organizers noted the reports of B.A. Keller, L.A. Ivanov, N.I. Vavilov, V.R. Zalensky, V.N. Khitrovo. Particular attention in the paper is paid to the participation of N.I. Vavilov in the congress. At the request of the organizing committee, he made a report on the raw of homologous series in hereditary variability. Vavilov left his impressions of the congress in private letters, where in particular he wrote that the Congress as a whole was interesting, more than he could have expected… The resolution of the congress stated the rich content of applied botany in relation to agriculture, horticulture and forestry. The first congress of applied botany remained the only one in the history of Russian botany. Subsequently, meetings of applied botanists continued in the sections in other scientific forums and, above all, at Russian Botanical Society (RBS)’ congresses. In 1947, a section of cultivated plants was created in the RBS — the successor to the section of applied botany.

In recent years, the question of role of I.V. Michurin in the birth of Soviet “Michurinist biology”
and the ‘master/teacher’ of its future leader, T.D. Lysenko, has become relevant again. However,
there is a significant lack of documentary information on this issue. The only available evidence of
one-sided contacts (from Lysenko to Michurin) can be found in I.V. Michurin’s personal fonds
finding aid, including the obituary and posthumous articles about Michurin. The lack of information
concerning the communications between Lysenko and Michurin probably reflects its actual scarcity.
It may also be due to the censoring of information concerning the sacred figure in the Soviet country,
I.V. Michurin, in the era of the Soviet “Michurinist biology”. Thus, the name of N.I. Vavilov who
was known to have extensive contacts and warm personal relationship with I.V. Michurin icannot be
found in Michurin’s personal fonds finding aid.
It is often mentioned that Lysenko was close to Michurin in his rejection of genetics. However, despite
the fact that Michurin has been, indeed, known for his negative attitude towards genetics, this attitude
was typical for many outstanding biologists of the early 20th century, at least in Russia (e.g., Kliment
Timiryazev). For Michurin, the lack of understanding of genetics was even more excusable than for
his contemporaries since he never considered himself a scientist and never tried to create a scientific
doctrine.
In this article, we briefly discuss the value of I.V.Michurin’s works for the contemporary biology,
his attitude towards genetics, his relationship with N.I. Vavilov and his alleged contacts with T.D.
Lysenko with the emphasis on the lack of documents concerning the latter. The oral evidence of I.V.
Michurin’s attitude towards the works of T.D. Lysenko is published for the first time.

The most dramatic waves of the Russian emigration occurred in the first decades of Communist rule. This paper presents a peculiar émigré story that started in Soviet Russia of the 1930s-40s, continued in the post war Western Europe and ended in the USA. Such a theme very rarely, if ever, becomes a subject of historical discussion. The focus of the paper is the circumstances of life and work of the married couple — Vyacheslav Fabianovich Savitsky (1902-1965) and Elena Ivanovna Kharechko-Savitsaya (in the USA — Helen Savitsky) (1901-1986) who were geneticists and plant breeders. Their fate was utterly exceptional: the Savitskys had chosen to continue their research on sugar beets during the Nazi occupation of the Soviet Union in 1940s, then left their homeland with the retreating German troops, and finally made notable contributions to monogerm sugar beet breeding in the USA. In this paper I will analyze the multiple reasons for their emigration. I will also discuss the circumstances of their life in the USA, as well as the reasons of immediate success of their research projects.
