The article discusses the history of the research on fossil invertebrate animals from the Paleozoic and Mezo-Cainozoic deposits in Mongolia and their value for solving problems related to the geological structure and palaeogeography of Mongolia. It shows that the participants of the Joint Russian-Mongolian Paleontologic Expedition (JRMPE), initiated in 1969, played a major role in the research. The authors describe the findings of the study of the classical groups of fossil invertebrates in Mongolia (e.g. brachiopods, pearlwort, corals, erinaceouses, archaeocyatha, small-shell fauna, etc). It is noted that the JRMPE, in addition to the scientific data it produced, also played a significant role in the development of the Mongolian national palaeontological school. The article discusses for the first time the employees of PIN RAS who worked in and later reported on the expedition. The results of the research of the Russian and Mongolian scientists laid the bio-stratigraphic foundation for the geological mapping of Mongolia.

The exhibition “He Breathed Life into Fossils” opened in the State Darwin museum on April, 2013. It is dedicated to the 120 th anniversary of Yuri Alexandrovich Orlov (1893-1966) — a well-known Russian histologist, paleontologist, and academician in the USSR. Yuri Orlov began his way into science as a histologist and the atmosphere of his histological lab in the early 20 th century is recreated in the first showcase. Most of the exhibition is devoted to Orlov the paleontologist as far as his children’s interest in paleontology had turned into serious research work. Visitors can see the original materials that formed the basis of monographs and articles of Orlov as a paleontologist. Showcases as well as map-cases help us to imagine his activity as a scientific organizer and introduce us to his writings, including popular works. A separate section is devoted to his “fieldwork” since Y.A. Orlov organized and participated in many major paleontological expeditions. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Paleontological Museum named after Yuri Orlov.

In the latest days of January 1974, the organizing committee of the 20th session of the Soviet (All-Union) Paleontological Society (Leningrad), devoted to taphonomy and its founder Prof. Ivan A. Efremov (1907-1972), was informed that any mention of the name of that well-known paleontologist and science fiction writer would not be permitted. The speeches in memory of I.A. Efremov prepared by Leningrad paleontologists Mikhail V. Kulikov (1913-1985) and Lev I. Khosatzky (1913-1992) were banned. The biography of I.A. Efremov is briefly outlined. The situation around I.A. Efremov appeared after the publication of his novel “Bull Hour” (1968, 1970) is described. The writer was under the ideological control from the Communist Party and secret service. The search was conducted in the home of Efremov in a month after his death (1972). The suppression of his name at the 20th session of the Soviet Paleontological Society seemed to be impacted by the generally unfavorable atmosphere which had formed around the famous writer in the early 1970s, although the true reasons and initiators of the suppression are still unknown. Some documents including two protest letters written by scientists from Moscow and Leningrad and sent to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the USSR, banned abstracts of memorial speeches as well as three letters of Efremov’s widow to Dr. L.I. Khosatzky are published here for the first time.
