В статье освещена история основания премии академика К.М. Бэра. Уделено внимание участию самого ученого в процессах присуждения наград его имени. Приведены сведения о составе рецензентов и лауреатах престижной среди биологов конца XIX — начала XX в. Бэровской премии. Сделан акцент на конфликтных ситуациях, возникавших в работе конкурсных комиссий, подчёркнут научный, социокультурный аспект существовавшей в Санкт-Петербургской Императорской Академии наук традиции премиального поощрения учёных за их вклад в развитие науки.

The article describes the foundation of the Awards Named for the Academician Karl von Baer. The author pays attention to the participation of Baer himself in the process of awarding the prizes. The article contains the information about the lists of reviewers and nominees of this prestigious prize among biologists. Emphasis is placed on the conflicts that arose during the nomination committees’ work, as well as the social and cultural aspects of the tradition of rewarding scientists at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences at the end of 19 th and beginning of the 20 th centuries.
