The publication is devoted to the memory of the talented protistologist, for whom the studies in science were not just a profession, but a vocation and way of life. For a scientist, as for an artist who wants to contribute to the development of art and become recognizable, it is important to find his own theme and style of work. A. Yudin had such a theme. Within the walls of the Institute of Cytology, he came a long way from a senior laboratory assistant to a chief researcher. In 1981 he became Doctor of Biological Sciences, in 2001 Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. And all these years he remained faithful to his favorite scientific theme — epigenetics. As a result of numerous experiments, it has become clear that epigenetic phenomena are inherent in the inheritance of mating types in predacious dileptus, and in time, variation of the serotypes of these large ciliates. For three decades, Alexander Yudin was the chairman of the library council of the Institute of Cytology, his role in the formation of the collections of the library can not be overestimated. His extensive erudition allowed him to be the permanent chairman of the Dissertatin Council in the Institute of Cytology for many years. Hist studies raised new questions for many generations of protistologists and geneticists.
