The paper presents previously unknown information from the scientific biography and social activities of Vladimir Alekseevich Vodyanitsky, a prominent Soviet hydrobiologist (1893–1971), doctor of biological science, professor, who made a significant contribution to the development of scientific research and the creation of biological stations and scientific institutions in the south of the USSR in the 20s of the last century and their revival after the World War II. On the basis of published and archival materials, newspaper publications, the role of prof. Vodyanitsky in the restoration of the Sevastopol Biological Station (SBS) and Sevastopol City after the World War II is characterized. He refuted the statement about low sea productivity, associated with the presence of hydrogen sulfide layer, proved the existence of a process of continuous mixing of deep and surface waters. His theoretical developments on the water exchange of the Black Sea became the basis of the evidence base of the USSR, which in 1957 prevented the burial of radioactive waste from Europe and the USA in its waters. The successes of the USSR hydrobiological research in the World Ocean, without exaggeration, were due to his concept of complex expeditions and the rationale for them of the project of a specialized research vessel. He was the first to prove in 1936 the importance of studying the Mediterranean Sea for the Black Sea ecosystem. He initiated the reorganization of the biological station at the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas, which he headed for over twenty years. Thanks to his talent as a scientist and a teacher, a scientific school of marine hydrobiology was created. Long-term public work as a deputy and a chairman of the commission on green building and landscaping of the Sevastopol City council of workers’ deputies highlighted the talent of a hydrobiologist as a specialist in landscape architecture. V.A. Vodyanitsky developed a scientific approach to the landscaping of Sevastopol, which made it possible to significantly increase the intensity of green building, to increase the area of parks, boulevards and public gardens almost 20 times. The scientific principles he singled out, such as respecting the ratio of volumes and forms, the correct selection of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, their harmonious combination, the creation of an aesthetically attractive space, are still relevant today and have become the basis of modern landscape design. Contribution of V.A. Vodyanitsky in the scientific and social activities are marked by many state and academic awards, his name is listed in the book of Labor Glory of the hero-city of Sevastopol, to which he selflessly served and was committed till the end of his life.
