This article reviews Olga Elina’s recent biography of Russian plant breeder Piotr Lisitsyn (1877–1948). Examining the author’s perspective on Lisitsyn and his contribution to plant breeding and selection, I emphasize the importance of her insights into the broader context of Russian social history. I argue that Elina’s analysis of the relationship between the government and the zemstvos in shaping the network of agricultural experimental stations significantly alters our understanding of the complex patterns of modernization in late Imperial Russia.
