This is a review of the book by A.L. Rizhinashvili “The development of ecosystemic views in aquatic
ecology (Russian Empire — USSR, first half of the XX century). The review describes in detail the
main provisions of the book. A summary of all of its chapters and sections is provided. As proven
in this monograph, by the mid-1930s, the ideas of communities as organisms formed in ecology
due to hydrobiologists and terrestrial ecologists. The formation of systemic concepts in productive
hydrobiology and ecology in general permeates the entire monograph. In this context, the comparison
of the three main concepts (V.I. Zhadin, G.G. Vinberg and R. Lindeman), which, despite their
differences, have in common the fact that they are based on the organismic (holistic) representations
of a water body, appears very significant.
