Сергей Иванович Огнёв (1886–1951) — выдающийся российский зоолог, основатель московской научной школы териологов. Его научные интересы начали формироваться с детства благодаря атмосфере, созданной его родителями — отцом Иваном Флоровичем Огнёвым, гистологом, профессором Московского университета, и матерью Софьей Ивановной Огнёвой, происходившей из рода Киреевских. Как и у подавляющего большинства зоологов — современников С.И. Огнёва, его интерес к зоологии начинался с охотничьих пристрастий и был неотделим от них. В своих воспоминаниях С.И. Огнёв много места уделяет своим первым охотничьим опытам, первым коллекциям насекомых, пойманных им лично или приобретённых, и людям, оказавшим наиболее сильное влияние на формирование его интереса к зоологии. Публикуемая рукопись воспоминаний С.И. Огнёва хранится в семейном архиве потомков Огнёвых и подготовлена к печати его племянницей Еленой Петровной Крюковой.

S.I. Ognev’s memoires “How I became a zoologist”

Sergei Ivanovich Ognev (1886–1951) is an outstanding Russian zoologist, the founder of the Moscow
scientific school of theriologists. His scientific interests began to form from childhood thanks to the
atmosphere created by his parents: his father Ivan Florovich Ognev, a histologist, professor of Moscow
University, and his mother Sofia Ivanovna Ogneva nee Kireevskaya (the famous Russian philosopher
I.V. Kireevsky was her relative). Like the vast majority of zoologists — his contemporaries, S.I. Ognev
was formed as zoologist with a strong influence of hunting predilections. In his memoirs, S.I. Ognev
devotes a lot of space to his first hunting experience. To the ear of a modern reader, this may sound
shocking, but the inextricable connection of vertebrate zoology with hunting was the absolute standard
for science until quite recently. The memoirs of S.I. Ognev quite accurately describe the atmosphere of
the zoological community of that time. He also talks about his first collections of insects he personally
caught or acquired. His memories of people who had the strongest influence on the formation of his
interest in zoology are especially valuable. Among them were famous zoologists M.A. Menzbir and
P.P. Sushkin, as well as his relatives.
This manuscript of S.I. Ognev is stored in the archive of Ognev family and prepared for publication by
his niece Elena Petrovna Kryukova.
