В статье показаны вехи жизненного пути главного научного сотрудника СПбФ ИИЕТ РАН Якова Михайловича Галла. Кратко изложены события, относящиеся к жизни членов семьи Я.М. Галла на Украине до Великой Отечественной войны и во время неё. Путь в науку и годы научной карьеры рассмотрены в тесной связи с историей эпохи, с людьми, игравшими видную роль в отечественной науке, и показана роль, которую они сыграли в судьбе Я.М. Галла. На основе документов архива СПбФ ИИЕТ прослежены наиболее значимые зарубежные командировки и показано их важнейшее значение для научной работы Я.М. Галла. Наиболее полно освещены события, связанные с защитой докторской диссертации, дающие новый взгляд на жизнь и творческую среду биолого-почвенного факультета СПбГУ (ЛГУ). Дан краткий обзор основных научных трудов, изданных в виде монографий в 2004, 2012, 2016 гг. В работе над текстом использованы материалы устных бесед автора с Я.М. Галлом. Статья сопровождается фотографиями из личного домашнего архива Я.М. Галла.

A whole different biology does exist: to the the 75th birthday of Yasha Gall

The article shows the milestones of the life path of Yakov Mikhailovich Gall, chief researcher at the
St. Petersburg Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It describes
the life stories of Y.M. Gall family members in the Ukraine before and during the Great Patriotic. We
also consider the path to the academic career and the years of a scientific research in close connection
with the history of the Era, with people who played a prominent role in Soviet science, and the role
they played in the fate of Y.M. Gall. Based on the documents of the archive of the St. Petersburg
Institute of Physics and Technology, the most significant foreign business trips were traced and their
most important impact on the scientific work of Y.M. Gall was revealed. The details of the story of
the defense of a doctoral dissertation give us a new look at the life and creative environment of the
biological and soil faculty of St. Petersburg State University (Leningrad State University). This article
also presents a brief overview of the main scientific works published in the form of monographs in
2004, 2012, 2016. The text is to a great extent based on the materials of the author’s oral conversations
with Y.M. Gall, and it is supplemented by photos from the personal home archive of Y.M. Gall.
